ElevenLabs SFX review: short sound effects for videos and games from a plain text description. Features, pricing, ready-made prompts and tips for precise sound.

ElevenLabs SFX Review: Sound Effects from Text, Online

ElevenLabs SFX is a model that generates short sound effects from a text description. You describe what should be heard — a button click, a creaking door, an engine rumble, leaves rustling — and get a ready audio file you can drop into your edit. In this ElevenLabs SFX review we look at what the model can do, how much a generation costs, how to write prompts that work, and where it genuinely saves time.

The model comes from ElevenLabs, a company best known for speech synthesis and voiceover. SFX is a separate direction: there is no narrator here, only sound. It is a tool for video creators, social media teams, game and app developers, podcasters — anyone who needs foley, ambience and effects without spending an afternoon digging through stock libraries.

In WebTerra AI, ElevenLabs SFX runs online in your browser. There is nothing to install and no separate account to create: open the audio generator, type a description and press the button.

What ElevenLabs SFX can do

The model has one core job, and it is a very practical one: turning a text description into sound. It accepts text only — you do not upload reference audio or images. A prompt can be short (“mouse click”) or detailed, with the character of the sound, the space it happens in and the mood.

To get started faster, the dashboard offers presets — templates you can build on:

  • Single sound effect — a short sound for editing: a hit, a click, an object falling.
  • Background ambience — a longer bed for a scene: rain on the window, a busy café, a forest at night.
  • UI and transitions — whooshes and clicks for videos and apps.
  • Game sounds — coins, level-ups, victory stingers.
  • Vehicles and machines — engines, trains, planes.
  • Animals and birds — animal sounds for videos.
  • Magic and sci-fi — spells, portals, futuristic effects.

Presets are a starting point, not a cage. Pick a template, add your own details, and you get a variation that does not exist in any library.

A 450-character limit is roughly three or four meaningful sentences. That is enough to describe the source, its character, the space and the pace, but not a whole scene script: the model creates a sound, not a film soundtrack.

How to use ElevenLabs SFX in WebTerra AI

  1. Sign up for WebTerra AI — 60 free credits land in your account right away.
  2. Open the audio generator in the dashboard and pick ElevenLabs SFX.
  3. Choose a preset or write your own description. English prompts give the most predictable results.
  4. Make sure the description fits within 450 characters and start the generation.
  5. Listen to the result. If it is not quite right, refine the prompt — add the material, the distance to the source or the type of room — and generate again.
  6. Download the file and add it to your edit, game or app.

Because a single generation costs so little, the most efficient approach is to make several takes of the same sound with small changes to the description and keep the best one. That is exactly how sound designers work with libraries: they audition a dozen takes to find the one that fits.

ElevenLabs SFX pricing

Cost of one generation with default settings (a description of around 100 characters) on each plan:

PlanCreditsPrice
Starter2about $0.026
Pro2about $0.024
Ultra2about $0.023

The dollar price is the number of credits multiplied by the cost of one credit on your plan. For sound effects the difference between plans is barely noticeable, so ElevenLabs SFX is equally good value whether you are just trying the service or producing in volume.

The 60 welcome credits you get on sign-up cover about thirty sound effect generations. That is plenty to add sound to a few videos, build a set of interface clicks, or collect the basic sounds for a game prototype. Plan details are on the WebTerra AI pricing page.

ElevenLabs SFX prompt examples

Each prompt below is ready to paste, with a short note on what it is for.

Soft UI click, short and crisp, plastic button, close-up, no reverb

A clean, short click for a button in an app or on a website. “No reverb” keeps the sound dry.

Fast whoosh transition, airy, left to right movement, modern video editing style

A whoosh for cutting between shots in Reels, Shorts or a YouTube video.

Gentle rain on a window at night, distant thunder, calm and cozy ambience

A background bed for a cozy scene, a lo-fi video or a meditation clip.

Retro video game coin pickup, bright 8-bit chime, single hit

A classic coin sound for a mobile game or gamified features in an app.

Old diesel truck engine starting, rough idle, outdoor, medium distance

Vehicles and machines: an old truck engine turning over, heard from a short distance away.

Magical portal opening, shimmering energy, deep low hum rising to a sparkle

A fantasy effect for a trailer, an animation or an in-game moment.

Tips for writing sound effect prompts

Describe the source and the material

“A hit” is too vague. “Wooden door slam” or “metal pipe hit on concrete” tells the model exactly what is making the sound. Material — wood, metal, glass, fabric — changes the timbre dramatically.

Specify the space and the distance

The same sound in a bathroom, a forest and an empty hangar is three different sounds. Add “indoor”, “outdoor”, “small room”, “large hall”, “close-up” or “distant”. If you plan to process the sound later, ask for “dry” or “no reverb”.

One sound per prompt

The model generates effects, not layered scenes. If you need footsteps, a door and thunder at once, generate three separate sounds and mix them in your editor. That way you control the level and timing of each one.

Add character and movement

Words like “soft”, “aggressive”, “rising”, “fading out”, “single hit” or “repeating” tell the model how the sound evolves over time. For interfaces, try “short”, “subtle”, “crisp”; for trailers, “powerful”, “deep”, “impact”.

Keep it lean

The limit is 450 characters, but the best results often come from one or two sentences. If the output feels muddy, cut the extra adjectives and keep what matters.

Build families of sounds

When sounds should feel like one set — clicks for an entire app or a series of in-game rewards — keep a shared base description and change just one detail. For example: “soft UI click, short, plastic” for a regular button, “soft UI click, short, plastic, slightly higher pitch” for confirm, and “soft UI click, short, plastic, low and muted” for cancel. The set will sound coherent instead of like a random grab bag from different libraries.

Think about the mix in advance

If the effect will sit under music or a voice, ask for a clean, dry sound with no background — it is easier to level and add space to in the editor. Ambience beds are the opposite: describe them as a whole environment with distant details and a sense of depth so they set the mood of the scene on their own.

Who ElevenLabs SFX is for

  • Social media and short-form video. Transitions, clicks, whooshes and accents under captions — the things that make short videos feel snappy.
  • Video editing and ads. Sounds for objects in the frame: a bottle opening, a lock clicking, dishes clinking. Especially useful for AI-generated clips that come without audio.
  • Game developers. Coins, level-ups, hits, magic, footsteps — a starter kit for a prototype or an indie game.
  • Apps and websites. Notification, success and error sounds.
  • Podcasts and audio stories. Atmospheric beds and effects for narration.
  • Educational content. Animals, vehicles and nature for lessons and kids’ videos.

A typical WebTerra AI workflow: generate a clip with one of the video models, create a few matching effects with ElevenLabs SFX, then put everything together in your editor. More audio tools are collected on the voice and sound page.

ElevenLabs SFX compared with other audio models

ElevenLabs MultilingualVoiceover, 29 languagesYou need a narrator’s voice rather than effects
ElevenLabs MusicStudio-quality tracksYou need a full piece of music

ElevenLabs SFX is strongest when you need a precise, recognizable sound of an object or action. If you want a rhythmic bed or a musical loop, read our reviews of Stable Audio and Stable Audio 2.5. For a narrator, ElevenLabs Multilingual is the better fit, and for a complete track, look at ElevenLabs Music. In practice these models complement each other: voice, music and effects together make a finished soundtrack.

ElevenLabs SFX limitations

  • Text input only. You cannot upload your own sound as a reference — the model works from the description alone.
  • 450-character prompt limit. Complex layered scenes are best split into separate sounds.
  • Short effects. The model is built for editing and game sounds, not long compositions or music.
  • No speech. For reading text aloud you need a speech synthesis model.
  • Results vary. Like any generative model, SFX can return different takes for the same request. Plan on a few attempts.

FAQ

How much does one sound effect cost?

A generation with default settings costs 2 credits — roughly two to three cents depending on your plan.

What language should I write prompts in?

English works best: the model reads sound terms like “whoosh”, “impact” and “ambience” most accurately.

Can I use the sounds in commercial projects?

The terms for using generated results are set out in the service rules — check them before a commercial project.

Can ElevenLabs SFX make music?

It is designed for effects. For music, use ElevenLabs Music; for loops, Stable Audio.

What if the sound is not what I wanted?

Refine the description: add material, space, distance and movement. Removing extra words often helps too. Since a generation costs pennies, a few attempts are normal practice.

Do I need to install anything?

No. ElevenLabs SFX runs online in the browser, and you can download the result immediately.
